First Test
Riverdale Christian Academy (RCA) Ambassadors 8 man football team will take the field at Shandon in a non-conference game Saturday, Sept. 15th. For RCA, it will be the first game of the 2006-2007 year. Last year the Ambassadors played a modified schedule of 5 games vs. JV teams in their first year of 8 man tackle football. Compiling a 5-0 record was exciting, but the Ambassadors have their work cut out for them this year. The California Interscholastic Federation has begun what many think is the first ever 8 man, small school, league football in the Central Valley. At this time, 5 teams are committed to the division. RCA hopes to make a big mark while returning all but 4 starters from last year.
The team was saddened by the loss of 2nd year player, senior Lee Lantis in a tragic car accident. Lee was destined to be a leader on the team as well as a play maker. Last year vs. the extremely talented Laton Mustangs, Lee turned the game arond with 3 huge tackles for losses on a Mustang drive. Stepping up to take his place will be difficult as Lee had more football experience than any of the team. Coach Chuck Spencer says the field is wide open with several younger players working hard. "We look for our returning players with game experience to feel in the gaps. Jeremiah Thompkins has shown flashes of toughness. Paul Raygoza, and Jed Davis are two guys I really expect to make big plays. Paul Whited has shown marked improvement."
The Shandon Outlaws come into the game looking to improve a 0-1 record. Coach Spencer(RCA) would like the non-conference win to boost the confidence of his players. "Execution... that will be the deciding factor on us bringing home a win."
